Passing Time
Birds telling fortunes. Street festivals. Mysore bonda. Chaat stations. Pongal parties. Autorickshaw driving and screaming at the same time. Agra next weekend. Long days. Tata Consultancy Services headquarters. The Madras Club. Meeting the incoming Consul General. Next month Kuala Lumpur? Sunshine, finally.

Life, life
Bangkok is a beautiful city where the air is balmy, the streets are broad and clean, and humanity is cheerful. There is a wise little river that goes through the place on which people ride big rocking boats to their destinations.
There are Western shops but also golden temples and joss paper and sparrows to be released for prayers. There are sex workers everywhere, to be sure, but they seem to be in control of the situation. I was short 100 baht on a lunch I had taken on my own (being around 10 other officers in close quarters can be stressful to say the least) and the waiter was ok with it and let me walk back to my hotel and bring back the balance.
There is strong coffee, and there are lots of Chinese tourists, bustling night markets, and little carts with food and beer wheeling around everywhere. There are jazz bands playing and taxis with meters and good music on the radio.
